MEDITATION TOPICS
Man's conformity with the environment surrounding him has two main sources or causes: that which comes from the perception of his physical senses, and that which originates from internal reasons, such as the sense of duty, some other principle, or a preconceived idea like political tactics, or as a yoga method to test the spirit and strengthen the will.
When our conformity aligns with the environment because of our perception, it does so through an impulse that comes from outside. A beautiful garden, a luxurious and comfortable room, a meeting of select people, a pleasant workplace, conforms and delights us because we have a pleasant perception of the environment that we accept willingly; and this acceptance is precisely what we call conformity.
But that conformity which comes from our internal forum is not the same as the one already described, because it obeys a superior reason that imposes itself upon the environment itself and forces us to remain in it, even if we do not accept it willingly and even if it is repugnant to our intelligence. And our spirit adheres to that unpleasant frame, without rebellion and without effort, happy to be in it, vibrating in a higher bliss than that provided by the delight of the senses. And so a hero may well detest the environment of war, and hate the repugnant sight of gunpowder and blood, and forget it by virtue of the impulse that comes from within to serve his country and to surpass others through his attachment to the civic principles that sublime his condition as a citizen. And so the doctor and the nurse, and the head of a penal center, and the agronomic engineer in a white helmet and short sleeved shirt who enters the jungle, sinking his steps in the swamp, amidst a cloud of mosquitoes and under the oppressive sun... All happy, with that happiness which is not that of bodily comfort, but of the hope of the soul, the pride of the soul, the conviction of the soul, to be able to transmute, like the doctor and the nurse, the pain of others into a smile of relief; to be able to channel crime, like the head of the penal center, within the postulates of the law; and to be able to transform the hostile jungle, like the agronomic engineer, into productive plots and welcoming cities...
Our Probationers and Providers are not obligated to conform to a bad working environment, unless it is through the impulse of their buddhic body which, from their internal forum, must give them strength and even the joy of remaining in an environment that is repugnant to their eyes. To force them to like that, through the perception of the senses, would be to distort their taste, to damage and corrupt their spiritual sensitivity, and to make them commune with poisonous hosts.
Do not accept the bad environment, oh brother and disciple, so that you do not assimilate it; serve it only, placing your spirit at the height of your missionary purposes. Disguise it, just as our intelligence disguises a bad character, and our sense of smell disguises bad odors.
When out of love we remove pus, drain the filthy pond and care for our elderly mother, our spouse, our children, and even the disabled neighbor who cannot fend for themselves, then our whole being smells sweet inside, our whole I perfumes more than all the roses in the world, and its breath fills the heavens, because that perfume is that of the angel, because that is the scent of holiness!
