Como ejercita el musculo el atleta,
y como el músico el difícil instrumento;
como pule sus versos el poeta
para imprimir ritmo y sentimiento;

Así tu alma, yo creo, se concreta
con método y constancia en el evento,
a la gimnasia - íntima y secreta -
que acrecienta el poder del pensamiento.

Pero en cada cumpleaños haz recuento
de tu progreso hacia la ansiada meta.

Ve si tu fe es un férreo fundamento

o si cual planta escuálida vegeta…
y haz tu diaria labor con mente quieta
que cuando el surco es recto… uno… Da el ciento!

As the athlete exercises the muscle,
and the musician the difficult instrument;
as the poet polishes his verses
to imprint rhythm and sentiment;

So your soul, I believe, solidifies
with method and constancy in the event,
through gymnastics—intimate and secret—

But at every birthday, take account
of your progress toward the longed-for goal.

See if your faith is an iron foundation

or if, like a scrawny plant, it merely vegetates...
